PTFCA Indoor States - PSU
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
We'll start off with a 'would've, could've'. What would've been one heck of a battle in the triple jump with Ahmir Johnson in it (season best 48-5.75), still produced three jumpers over 48-0. Milton-Hershey's Treyvon Ferguson hit 48-10 for the win, but Johnson's mark is still the third best in the state.
The 4x4 team, sans (that's french for 'without' for all you Cowboy fans) Ahmir, produced 2 personal bests (soph Robert Wilson 52.4, Brendan Cantos 53.7) and one season best split (Rahsheed Wright 51.0 lead-off leg). Distance man Ben Hoyer, filling in for Johnson, gritted his teeth and literally sprinted his anchor leg in a close-to-his-best of 55.7 to finish off the race. Ranked 20th out of 24 going in, we still managed to move up a few spots to finish in 16th.

'Last Chance' Meet - 4x4 Relay to States - #5 for Johnson
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
Friday night at Lehigh, the 4x400 relay team of Robert Wilson 53.4, Rahsheed Wright 51.8, Ahmir Johnson 51.8 and Brendan Cantos 54.5 qualified for the PTFCA Indoor State Championships. Their 3:32.24 dipped below the 3:33.23 standard. While only good enough for 5th here, it was fast enough to rank 20th in the state so far (they accept 24 teams). The 4x4 team joins Matt Maiale (3000) and Ahmir Johnson who has now qualified in a total of 5 events!
TFCAGP # 8 - Wilson, Distance Medley into Meet of Champs
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
Saturday marked the 8th and final 'Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia' regular season meet at Lehigh University. Soph Robert Wilson's personal best of 53.78 400M was enough for a fourth place and a spot in the Meet of Champions (MOC). The Distance Medley team of Ben Hoyer, Rahsheed Wright, Nathan Leung and Matt Maiale also qualified with a second place finish. (Athletes qualify by hitting a mark or automatically by finishing first or second). The Trojans have MOC qualifiers in 13 out of 15 events.
Saturday's medalists also included:
Ahmir Johnson - 1st place long jump 22-4, 2nd place High Jump 6-0
Rahsheed Wright - 5th place 60 dash 7.31
Liam Davies - 4th place 60 hurdles 8.97
Noah Kilshaw - 3rd place Pole Vault 11-0
Maiale State Qualifier 2 Mile at Ocean Breeze
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
On Saturday, our distance runners took full advantage of the world class facility that is the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. All ten who stepped on the track set personal bests including Matt Maiale. Working his way up from the back of the pack during the early stages of the 2 mile run, he closed with a flurry, to take 2nd in his division. After the 'fast heat' concluded, his time of 9:37.64 was good enough for 5th overall. It converts to 8:55.01 for 3000M (SQS 8:58.43).
Rahsheed Wright sprinted his way into the 55M final with the 5th fastest qualifier (out of 64). However, a less-than-perfect start cost him in the final, placing 8th.
Other notables included Nathan Leung who finished 1st in his division (White) of the mile while chopping a full 9 seconds off his previous best finishing in 4:36.65. Also winning his division (Blue) was Sam Klugherz posting 4:54.89, also a personal best.

Johnson Continues to Re-Write Record Books
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
Competing in his specialty, the triple jump, for the first time this season at Glen Mills on Saturday, Ahmir Johnson hit 48' 5.75" Establishing a new indoor school record (47' 0.75 Folerin Ijelu 2008). The jump currently ranks #1 PA by over 3 feet and #4 US and #2 Wiss all-time indoors or out.
Maiale #3 Pa. 3000M @ Burdette Indoor Classic
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
This week, the opportunity arose for Matt Maiale to go against American Conference XC Champ Jason Cornelison and possibly exact some revenge. Sticking to his pacing through the early laps and sitting in mid-pack, he slowly moved up and onto Jason's shoulder with 2 to go. Cornelison accelerated noticably trying to shake our guy but everytime he glanced over his shoulder (which he did often), there was Matt. With a mad dash over the last 150m, both runners were flat out, with only .5 sec separating them at the line. Second place gets him into the MOC, and 10 sec off States.
We took steps towards post-season by gaining a few more spots in the Meet of Champs. Liam Davies scored his third 60HH PR in as many races with his 8.82; Rahsheed Wright qualified in two, his early season times of 23.66 (200) and 52.97 (400), although far from his best, were both under the MOC standards.
Missing this week was Ahmir Johnson, being cautious with a tight hamstring.
60HH Davies 8.82 PR 8th place MOC
200M Wright 23.66 8th place MOC
400M Wright 52.97 4th place MOC
800M Thistle 2:20.28 23rd place
Mile Hoyer 4:41.52 4th place
3000M Maiale 9:10.13 2nd place MOC
SMR 4:01.81 14th place (Wilson 57.1, Futch 25.8, Rasheed 27.5, Shamsi 2:11.2)
4x200 1:46.95 28th place (Davies 25.5, Wilson 25.5, Futch 28.0 (fell), Rasheed 27.8)
4x400 3:59.0 DQ-out of lane (Maiale 60.8, Hoyer 58.6, Thistle 59.4, Futch 60.2)
4x800 9:13.74 5th place (Shamsi 2:10.8, Hippensteal 2:17.2, Quinn 2:20.7, Ruffner 2:24.0)
Ahmir Johnson Sets Wiss All-Time Best (Indoors or Out) Long Jump, Pa#1, US#2
Updated on 06/10/2022 | Don Betterly
After grabbing second place at States last spring in the triple jump, Johnson looks to re-write the record books before he's done. Record #1 came Saturday at Lehigh. His 23-4.75 betters 22-6.5 by Folarin Ijelu in 2009, and ranks him #1 Pa, #2 US so far. His record-setting jump would have won him both indoor AND outdoor state titles last year!
