Don Betterly.


Head Coach

Biography:

Coach Betterly is a Wissahickon Alum ('73) and was a PIAA state champion in three events (440 Dash, 2 Mile Relay, Mile Relay) in 1972 while running for Coaches Garis and Gallagher. After competing for Pitt, he came back to Ambler as an assistant under Coach Garis in 1986. Since taking the head position in 1995, he has helped carry on the winning tradition. With most of the credit going to his great staff, the Trojans have compiled a 144-26 dual meet record, with 17 Conference titles, 4 individual state champions and 35 state medalists.

Sean Stovall.


Assistant/Distance

Biography:

Coming on board in 2021 as the distance coach, Sean was the 2014 District One AA 3200m champion and was the 2015 District One AA 1600m champion. He also was a PIAA State qualifier for Springfield (Montco) in those events. Stovall also competed for Widener University as a collegian in XC, the 3K Steeple, 800m and 400m hurdles. As a former athlete, he brings practical experience to the team. 

Floyd Garis.


Volunteer Assistant/Field Events, Hurdles

Biography:

Coach Garis was the first track coach at the new Wissahickon High School in 1963. During his tenure as Head Coach, Wissahickon has been the PIAA State Champion 4 times: 1968 Class B (now AA), 1972 Class A (now AAA), 1982  AAA and indoors 1982. His teams won the District One title 5 times: Class B (AA) 1967 and 1968, Class A (AAA) 1972, AAA 1982, 1983.

 Along with team titles, he's had 17 individual PIAA State Champions, and 35 State Medalists. He was named the NHSF Coach of the Year in 1982 and inducted into the PA. Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2007. Coach Garis, along with Larry Wilson (Gwynedd Mercy), Otto Wolpert (Ambler Jr. High) and Leon Hill, founded the Ambler Olympic Club in 1967, which today boasts over 200 athletes each summer.
