Boys Track - Johnson Strikes Silver at States

Game Date
May 27, 2017
Score
TROJANS: 0
OPEN: 0

Every season, team goals are as follows: #1 - Undefeated dual meet season (missed by one), #2 - Penn Relays Plaque (check), #3 - Win the conference title (check), #4  - Send at least one individual and one relay to States (check) and, #5 - Medal at States (check). 4 out of 5 ain't bad!

Following a great four event performance at Districts, Ahmir Johnson decided to focus on the two horizontal jumps at States. The Triple Jump (Friday 9:00AM) has been his most consistent event and that proved to be the case as he was just 1.5" shy of his personal best hitting 46' 11.50" good enough for 2nd place. Saturday's Long Jump proved to be more challenging. Three attempts in the 20-9 range weren't enough to secure a spot in the finals (top 9) leaving him in 17th. His PR of 22-8 would have gotten him 4th.

Coach Garis has now coached 18 state meet medalists. Of those, 7 were triple jumpers ( state champions Folarin Ijelu 2008 and Ken Jones 1987).

In Friday's pre-lims, both Cam Christopher (400M) and the 4x400 had to improve on their performance at Districts (as well as get some help from others) in order to be in the top 8 and advance. Cam's 49.77 got him third in his heat but 10th over-all, just missing finals by .4 sec.

The 4x4 team posted a 3:23.07 at the district meet and the team of Max Davies (50.8), Eric Papazian (51.4PR), Cam Christopher (49.8) and Sam Kane (50.7) bettered that by .07 with 3:23.00.  That proved to be not enough as they missed the final by 3 sec. finishing third in their heat and 14th over-all.

NOTE: Whenever a team from ANY sport makes states, it's important to remember how many schools are in the PIAA. There are 305 AAA schools in track and field. Quite an accomplishment to just BE there.
